Hello Ladies and Gents and basically everyone else who is interested in reading my thoughts (greetings from John Malkovich - if you know what I mean!).
Today I'll write about a difficult topic. Nowadays everyone is trying to be tolerant and nice and sooo caring! Well, screw that? No, definitely not. But I'm sick of double standards and I'll explain why:
A few weeks ago an Yves Saint Laurent advertisement was banned because the model was way too skinny and looked anorexic or the short version: unhealthy. And I don't know if I'm okay with that.
It is important to teach vulnerable young people (not only women can have self-confidence issues), or basically everyone about loving and caring for themselves. Teach them how important it is to stop body shaming, to understand, that your body should never be your enemy, otherwise you would destroy yourself. Yes, all these lessons are beautiful and important, I am not arguing about that.
But what infuriates me is this: You should also teach them to live healthy and care for themselves. And if they do so and still have curves, even though they do a lot of sport? Who cares, their body is perfect the way it is and nothing to be ashamed of. And there is nothing wrong about that! But if they are eating a lot of healthy stuff, do a lot of sport and look like Victoria's Secret models - this should be perfectly fine, too!
And here is why: somehow within the last few months we forgot that "your body is perfect the way it is" works both ways. Not only for curvy people, but also for skinny people. And by banning an advertisement because it looked unhealthy, the watchdog basically said this towards the woman advertising YSL products: "The way you look makes other people sick. Stop looking like that. We don't want that to be seen in public. Just imagine what your appearance could do with other people minds. It would encourage them in hating their own bodies." This is so wrong. On so many levels. Just imagine being told anything like that, just for doing your job. What is worse? No one cares for her, no one asked the featured model for her opinion. People who complained didn't really care for her being probably sick, they felt uncomfortable watching the ad.
So apparently it doesn't matter anymore, if your appearance is determined by your genes or your metabolism. If you're too skinny you will be considered unhealthy, no matter what.
Yes, I know, there are definitely female and male models, that are anorexic and did a lot of unhealthy things to look the way they do. But I'm sure, that there are many more, whose outer appearance is not caused by bulimia.
But since this doesn't matter anymore, let's ban all the other ads that could make people sick, just by watching them. How about banning everyone from television or commercials, who looks overweight? Being overweight or even obese causes cardic infarcation, diabetes and/or thrombosis. So this should be forbidden, right? No? Oh, I forgot. Double standards. Here we go.
In case anyone is reading this and already on twitter tweeting: "horrible person hates overweight people! #lovemycurves" - stop it. This is not the intended message. I just want to show that double standards are ruining us. Why is it totally okay for famous stars to sing: "F*ck them skinny bitches"? But if anyone says anything as negative against overweight people they are being intolerant? Both statements are hurting people and none of them should be tolerated.
So is there any perfect solution? No. But if people are living a healthy and happy life they should be allowed to be confident about themselves. Skinny people included, otherwise we will always hurt someones feelings. Which means, that the body shaming of skinny people has to stop.
Was is right to ban the YSL ad? I don't think so. In case the model was anorexic (which not only describes her outer appearance but also her inner attitude towards her body), I'd say it was the right thing to do. But if she was totally fine, living her life the way it makes her feel good? No, in this case it would have been wrong.
I'm kind of curious whether I will receive any reactions connected to this post. Feel free to comment and tell me what you think!
Lots of love,
Curlina
